Talk about a crazy week. Finally, the dreaded cough from the bout of the flu is just about gone. Nothing could make me happier. The week began with getting my car inspected. This is one of those two year rituals that I hate, but something we all have to do.
One of my favorite things about island life and the radio business is getting to know the people that visit the friendly island of Sint Maarten. On Monday evening, I spent some time at Captain Oliver’s in Oyster Pond to attend the Annual SXM Lover’s Reception organized at the Iguana Bar. What a wonderful evening with an opportunity to meet so many people that visit our island. As we stood there and looked out of marina, we noticed a man fishing on a large rock on the left side of the harbor channel. This rock was completely surrounded by water and the man who was on top of the rock appeared to dry. There was not boat or raft in sight. How did he get on this rock? How long had he been there? It’s all a big mystery and we were all making bets as to the answer to the mystery. If any readers of this blog, saw the man leave, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org and let me know how the man left the rock. My guess, he was a swimmer.
After leaving the Annual SXM Lovers, I was invited to attend an event at the Princess Heights Boutique Hotel in Dawn Beach. My friend Emil Lee, also from Connecticut, asked me to attend this reception in honor of the resort being recognized as a Green Key resort. This means the resort maintains the highest ECO friendly standards. It was a great opportunity to learn how some very small changes can make a huge environmental impact and be economically friendly too. A great experience and congratulations to the entire team at Princess Heights.
This week at Island 92, Kelly from “Koolberry Jam” and “Church on Monday” joined me as my Monday “Dr. Soc’s Babe” and co-host. It’s always fun to have Kelly in the studio. On Tuesday, Daphne, the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta Intern visited for a new edition of Regatta Radio (listen here). On Wednesday, we introduced Captain Arielle (you may remember her from the 2014 Heineken Regatta) as my Wednesday co-host. We sent her home early because she was sick with the flu, but still came in for her first day on air as one of “Dr. Soc’s Babes”. Captain Arielle gets a big thumbs up for coming in while she was so sick!
Thursday saw visits from Heather Caputo from The St. Maarten Animal Welfare Foundation about their upcoming Wine Party and a new edition of Food Stuff Live with Topper and his special guest, Sam from Cugini. They brought really a fantastic antipasto for me to sample. YUM YUM YUM! Friday saw visit from John Caputo about the Rotary Club of St. Maarten’s upcoming Bazaar, Flea Market and Car Raffle. More about that later…. Elisa, the original “Dr. Soc’s babe” was also in on Friday with a round of new Horoscopes and a visit from Barbara about the 15th Annual Art in the Park, a fundraiser to help keep the Emilio Wilson Park clean! Truly a very busy week!
The weekend was also kind of crazy too! Saturday I had the opportunity to co-host the 1st Annual Beach Bash and Cruisers Party at Buccaneer Beach Bar. This event was organized by our friends at the Tradewinds Radio Network and sponsored by Budget Marine, Jimbo’s Rock and Blues Cafe and Antillean Liquors. Island 92 was proud to be a co-sponsor of this event. The ERIC STONE BAND rocked the crowd, along with a chance to ride the mechanical bull!
On Sunday morning, I got up nice and early to meet my fellow Rotarians from The Rotary Club Sint Maarten. We held a flea market and bazaar to raise money for youth, health and education programs on the island at Le Grand Marche. This turned out to be a GREAT day and whole bunch of fun. If you are on St. Maarten, stop by the Le Grand Marche Bush Road location and check out the Audi Q5 we are raffling off for the same reasons we had the flea market and bazaar. See any Rotarian on the island to buy a ticket, find us on Facebook and buy a ticket online. All for a great cause!
Such a busy week and weekend. Next weekend…. beach and only beach!
Until next time…. all my best!
