Pinch me… I must be dreaming!
Did 5 years of our lives really go by that fast!? I guess it’s true… time does fly when you’re having fun; especially Island Life Fun! Don’t get me wrong… It’s not all about Pina Coladas at the beach. It’s also been many days of hard work, determination to bring home the… um… coconut?! All jokes aside. I have to say that I am truly blessed with a husband that has always tried his outmost best to provide for his wife whatever he possibly could both physically and mentally. Do I complain?! Of course I do… I’m a woman and he’s a man… and by now I have learned that it’s the only way things actually gets done. 😉
Good things come to those who wait…
It all started one August Monday (2007) on Sandy Ground Beach in Anguilla. We where drunk… no actually we call that “mashed up in rags”! 21 years young and deeply in love… Maybe a little bit crazy since we have only been together for about 4 months at that point… But he knew what he wanted and with a little lot of liquid courage he went down on his knees and proposed to me in the middle of the sea of drunkies. Of course I said YES! Like I said crazy right!?
What’s more insane… his cousin snapped a shot the exact moment my sister came over to congratulate us with a hug! I only noticed this photo years later… Guess it really was meant to be 🙂
The morning after I woke up wondering if it was all just a dream… didn’t remember much but somethings you just can’t forget! He assured me that it was no joke and that he meant what he asked. Later that summer he went back to England to complete his Masters Degree. As difficult and heartbreaking as it was to be so far away from the man that I loved… it was surprisingly quite easy to wait.
Living the Island Love Life…
After what seemed to be the longest year of my life he finally returned! We decided to take things slow and give ourselves some time to travel, explore and most important actually be “together” before moving on to what we’ve promised each other from the start.
A couple of “Happy New Years“, August Mondays, Family Camping/Fishing Trips and (our favorite) Halloween’s later… we fast forwards to 2010.
Somewhere over the rainbow…
At Last our day has arrived… the day I was to add Petit to my name. A bit worried as it had been raining all day… Maybe it was luck… maybe meant to be… but as soon as my song came on for my father to walk me to my love the rain stopped and allowed us to enjoy our entire wedding ceremony and reception with no interruptions.
The main inspiration for our wedding was the Disney movie “The Little Mermaid”, (thus the sunset cruise) my husband’s fishing lifestyle… and our love for Heavy Metal. The groomsmen wore board shorts instead of fancy pants and the bridesmaids had black gloves and black accessories on bright turquoise dresses. I though it was a fun idea to have them create their own head pieces while we went through hundreds of songs to create our very own personalized wedding party playlist which by the way was a huge hit as we danced the night away…
With this ring I hook my Grander!
Anyone that knows us by now will know what we never do anything the exact traditional way. So instead of the entire boring ring promise vows we just said the words: “With this ring I hook my Grander.” as we exchanged rings. Why? Because to us there was no need for elaborate words when actions speak louder.
No fancy cake… just some good old Antillean Style Cashew Nut cake (my fav) with the most appropriate cake topper I could find… (bride hooking groom with a fishing rod) Instead of a wedding guest book… we preferred the happy wishes tied to our “Net of Love“.
We had shots.. they had shots… Everyone had shots! Maybe a few too many but did we care? No! Even though some people fell asleep in the parking lot… others jumped out of moving cars and another very helpful friend drove his drunk friend home and forgot to think about how he was getting back home… so had to hitch hike across the island at 4 am in the morning 😉 (You all know who you are!)
But hey! What’s a party without some crazy stories to tell the kids in the future… We sure had a blast and as you can see from the last photo below… I didn’t have to wait till after the wedding to “TRASH MY DRESS”!
